After all, it wasn't easy for her to accept the scars from her 15 surgeries, procedures to treat a brain tumor, punctured intestine, obstructed bowel, brain cyst, and a condition called hydrocephalus, where fluid fills the brain.<br /> <br /> However, Michelle's self-esteem really began to plummet at age 11, when she became keenly aware of her size: Michelle was hospitalized for three months during which she couldn't eat regular food. In the six months of recovery that followed, she couldn't exercise but went back to eating real foods, a transition that led to weight gain. It didn't help that her last bout of surgeries had left her with a scar at the bottom of her stomach. "[It] made it look like I had a fat roll," she says.<br /> <br /> As a preteen, Michelle couldn't help but notice she'd become the "fat friend," the one who couldn't fit into the clothes of her slimmer friends or join them on shopping trips to stores that only carried straight sizes. However, by age 15 Michelle proved she was wise beyond her years when she realized that dwelling on her weight was counterproductive — it would neither make her happy nor more comfortable in her skin. So she began making an effort to reroute negative thoughts, and soon found those thoughts crossing her mind less often. She started speaking openly about her scars, and that helped, too.<br /> <br /> Although she'd outgrown most of her size insecurities by the end of her teens, an incident last year made her feel just as bad as she did back in the day: Michelle developed a crush on a guy who used to like her friend, but when the pal found out, her response suggested Michelle was unworthy of the man's affection simply due to her weight.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Michelle dropped the friend for obvious reasons: Anyone who suggests your size makes you unworthy or unable doesn't deserve your friendship. We see her slice into her skin, we see the blood pour out, hear her cry and struggle to breathe. Then she is still.<br /> <br /> The suicide of the heroine in Netflix's new popular series "13 Reasons Why" shouldn't come as a shock, since it's depicted in the final episode of a series built around the character's death. But knowing that it is coming doesn't make it any easier.<br /> <br /> That stomach-turning scene has triggered criticism that it romanticizes suicide and prompted many schools across the country to send warning letters to parents and guardians. The show's creators are unapologetic, saying their frank depiction needs to be "unflinching and raw."<br /> <br /> "Many people are accusing the show of glamorizing suicide and I feel strongly — and I think everyone who made the show — feel very strongly that we did the exact opposite," said writer Brian Yorkey, who won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for the musical "Next to Normal," which grappled with mental illness. "What we did was portray suicide and we portrayed it as very ugly and very damaging."<br /> <br /> The 13-episode drama, co-produced by actress and singer Selena Gomez, is based on Jay Asher's young-adult 2007 bestseller about a high school student who kills herself and leaves behind 13 audiotapes detailing the events that led to her death, including sexual assault, substance abuse and bullying.<br /> <br /> Per usual, Netflix released all 13 hours of the series at once — on March 31 — leaving suicide prevention specialists worried teens might binge the entire series without a chance to fully absorb the issues and ask questions. They also say they wish the show would consistently flash the National Suicide Prevention hotline.<br /> <br /> "Graphic details about suicide we know historically are not recommended," said Phyllis Alongi, the clinical director of The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide . "I understand what the producers are saying but it could really be unsafe and I think we need to be a little more responsible."<br /> <br /> Netflix and the show creators point out that several mental health professionals were consulted and they offer a 30- minute show called "Beyond the Reasons" that delves deeper into the tougher topics portrayed, as well as a site with links to resources.<br /> <br /> The show is rated TV-MA, which means is may be unsuitable for children under 17, and three episodes that contain explicit material have "viewer discretion advised" warnings.<br /> <br /> But some mental health professionals are going further, with the National Association of School Psychologists declaring, "We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series."<br /> <br /> Critics of the show argue that depression and mental illness — keys to understanding suicide — are rarely mentioned and the fact that its heroine, Hannah, gets to tell her story after her death sends a potentially dangerous message. They're also upset that the school guidance counselor depicted on the show seems to blame the victim.<br /> <br /> The Jed Foundation and Suicide Awareness Voices of Education joined forces to create 13 talking points for young adults and guardians to discuss while watching the series, including warnings that the way the counselor is portrayed is "not typical" and that "leaving messages from beyond the grave is a dramatization produced in Hollywood."<br /> <br /> School systems across the country are alerting parents, making them aware that their teens may be streaming the series, urging them to watch it with them, and providing information to help them talk about it.<br /> <br /> In the upstate New York community of Grand Island, school administrators warned that the series "sensationalizes suicide." Indiana's largest school district warned in an email that the series "does not accurately model what we would want or hope individuals do if they are struggling or in crisis."<br /> <br /> In Maryland, principals in the Montgomery County public school system noticed teens talking about the series and wanted to make sure parents had resources to handle tough questions. A warning letter and links to resources eventually went out to all 35,000 middle schoolers.<br /> <br /> "There's a lot to take in and digest. If you're a young, growing mind being informed by what you see, this could have an impact," said Derek Turner, spokesman for the district. "So we're giving them tips and tools."<br /> <br /> According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide was the second leading cause of death for children and young adults ages 10 to 24 in 2014.<br /> <br /> Dr. Helen Hsu, a clinical psychologist in Fremont, California, whose work involves suicide prevention in schools, helped shape some of the "13 Reasons Why" scripts. She said not showing Hannah's suicide would be almost "coy and avoidant" and that medical studies aren't definitive about the risks of suicide contagion. Plus, there are already graphic how-to guides online.<br /> <br /> "If you think your child can't find this in one second on the internet already in the past 10 years, you are sadly mistaken," she said. "To say this is going to trigger that is sort of naive. What I really emphasized in the script writing was I said. 'It has to focus on that it's not glamorous, that it's ugly, it's painful and I really want you to focus on the pain of her parents and the people left.'"<br /> <br /> While suicide has been depicted on TV shows, the youth of the roles in "13 Reasons Why" is pioneering. It has clearly struck a nerve: The show has 340,000 Twitter followers and 2.4 million likes on Facebook.<br /> <br /> Gomez, who has talked openly about her own mental-health struggles, said she was braced for a backlash: "It's going to come no matter what. It's not an easy subject to talk about. But I'm very fortunate with how it's doing."<br /> <br /> Yorkey said creators wanted to tell a young adult story in "a more honest way that it has ever been told on television."<br /> <br /> "I understand it's hard to watch," he said. "It was supposed to be hard to watch because these things are incredibly hard to endure and we wanted to say, 'These things are happening in kids' lives. You can keep quiet about them. You can keep kids from watching shows about them. It's not going to stop them from happening in kids' lives and you should be talking about that.'"

According to exhibition curator Deborah Iskandar, the “Inadvertent Facelessness” sculptures convey the concept that facelessness is an unfortunate truth of humanity.<br /> <br /> Arti explores the natural evolution of the human mind amid the information received from social media and the overload of images in modern people’s newsfeeds, which leads to an ever-expanding number of acquaintances, with which we have little to no interaction.<br /> <br /> “My creative process usually starts with a thought that takes root in my brain,” Arti said, “I get my inspiration from the world around me. So to create my sculptures I work with the thoughts and translate them into pieces that are inspired by the people I see around me.” It took Arti a year to prepare her work for this exhibition.<br /> <br /> With a series of paintings entitled “Chasing Dragons”, Siobhan King charts a journey in Indonesia in search of the Komodo dragon and man’s endless quest of more metaphorical “dragons”. Hence the series depicts a critique of man’s greed and brutality in an uncertain world.<br /> <br /> Having traveled through Indonesia’s archipelago, which includes Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Flores, Java, Maluku, Lombok, Bali and much more, Siobhan also uses the “Chasing Dragons” series to immortalize her travels. She credited the journeys with influencing her creative process.<br /> <br /> “Though each painting is from a particular region, they are impressions and memories of the landscape and the layering of oil colors, which allow the painting to evolve during this process,” Siobhan said to The Jakarta Post via email.<br /> <br /> While Arti’s ceramic sculptures serve as a reminder of life in Jakarta and how facelessness is a recurring experience, Siobhan’s paintings observe the beauty of Indonesia from a visitor’s perspective, illustrating the natural landscapes and their near destruction, which many Indonesians may take for granted.<br /> <br /> “We wanted our work to converse in a visual sense. I had been working on a series of paintings entitled “Chasing Dragons” during my two years in Indonesia, and Arti had been working on a theme of “Inadvertent Facelessness,” Siobhan said. “Her ceramic pieces were all created for the exhibition, remaining within her theme, but she was aware that her figures populate my world of landscapes and my work, in turn, shows the impact of man on nature. Her ceramic figures playfully converse in a visual way with my paintings, under the skillful direction of our curator, Deborah Iskandar,” she continued.<br /> <br /> Arti agreed with Siobhan, “Our work together created a wonderful exhibition that showed our individuality, our different themes, yet this exhibition was a clear example of how beautifully two different mediums can come together and compliment the theme, and create a conversation,” she said.<br /> <br /> After a successful debut collaboration, the artists are looking forward to showcasing more exhibitions together. “We both feel that while working with our thought processes, we can make a space for the other person’s work. The paintings and pottery complement each other, “Arti said. Meanwhile, Siobhan is convinced that the conversation must continue, “It is my hope that we will work together again in the future and continue our creative conversation as a potter and a painter. Garnier is starting to use recycled materials for their plastic bottles. Other companies like Lush, Aveda, and Juice Beauty also take into consideration where their containers are sourced from. In the States, MAC Cosmetics has the Back-to-MAC program wherein every six pieces of original makeup packaging you return to them, you get a free lipstick.<br /> <br /> Still, the challenge for makeup companies is how packaging is crucial to the composition of their products. A glass container for a cream is necessary for it to maintain its integrity and potency. On the other hand, lightweight plastic lipstick tubes add to their marketability. How they will resolve this means they have to go back and rediscover the way we approach and produce beauty items as a whole. It’s so much stress that a regular sheet mask won’t be able to make it all go away—don’t even get us started with sheet masks.<br /> <br /> These truths make me reflect on the role of consumers as well. Focusing on saving the environment isn’t just limited to reducing food waste and choosing eco-friendly clothes, but also where your empty mascara tubes go. Here are some tips to help you cut down on your beauty waste contribution.<br /> <b><br /></b> <b>Stop hoarding</b><br /> <br /> Gulp! This is perhaps the hardest to do but collecting makeup items is essentially collecting containers for you to send to the trash. Think of just how much money you’ll get to save when you just buy what you really need.<br /> <b><br /></b> <b>Use up your favorite products</b><br /> <br /> A lot of makeup waste are unused products that have gone over the expiry date or were simply discarded for a number of personal reasons. Not only are you throwing the packaging but also ingredients which can be potentially toxic. They are stackable so compared to rounded counterparts, they need less shipping materials. Avoiding products in sachets or budget packs is also best. Sachets can be impractical over time as they accumulate and in essence, require more resources to produce. Plus, they aren’t efficient when you think about cost per use.<br /> <br /> <b>Reuse</b><br /> <br /> Glass cream jars can make for good candle holders (just make sure to clean them as the product residue can be flammable) or catch-alls for your vanity. I’ve learned from my sister how old nail polish also makes for good paint for her art projects. Every time you buy something, don’t just think about the benefits it will give your skin but also how it can have a life after you’re done with it.
